Radiographic, X-Ray & CT Inspection (RT / DR / CT)
Radiographic testing (RT) uses X-rays or gamma sources to image the internal volume of a part — finding porosity, inclusions, weld defects and hidden corrosion that surface methods cannot reach. Modern aviation work has largely moved from film to digital radiography (DR) and computed radiography (CR) for instant, archivable images, while industrial computed tomography (CT) provides full 3D reconstruction of castings, additive-manufactured parts and composite structures. RT is the most safety-regulated NDT method, requiring shielded enclosures, radiation-safety controls and qualified RT Level 2/3 personnel per EN 4179 / NAS 410. Procurement covers X-ray generators, DR detector panels, CR scanners, CT systems, isotope sources and the radiation-monitoring equipment that surrounds them.
"Radiographic capability is the highest-barrier NDT method to localise in-region — it needs shielded facilities, regulatory radiation-safety licensing (UAE FANR, Saudi NRRC) and certified RT personnel — so GCC MRO and aerospace-manufacturing build-outs treat DR and CT investment as a strategic localisation step. As Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 aerospace-manufacturing ambitions and UAE composite/AM programmes (Strata, Mubadala) mature, regional demand for digital-radiography and industrial-CT systems is an emerging, high-value procurement line."

Why it matters in Gulf aviation
- Radiographic testing images the internal volume of a part — finding porosity, inclusions, weld defects and hidden corrosion that surface methods cannot reach.
- It is the highest-barrier NDT method to localise: shielded facilities, regulatory radiation-safety licensing (UAE FANR, Saudi NRRC) and certified RT Level 2/3 personnel per EN 4179 / NAS 410.
- GCC MRO and aerospace-manufacturing build-outs therefore treat digital-radiography (DR) and industrial-CT investment as a strategic localisation step.
- As Saudi Vision 2030 aerospace-manufacturing ambitions and UAE composite / AM programmes mature, regional demand for DR and industrial-CT systems is an emerging, high-value procurement line.
Suppliers serving GCC operators
- Waygate Technologies (US) — Baker Hughes brand; X-ray generators, DR detector panels and industrial CT.
- YXLON (DE) — Comet-group X-ray and CT systems for castings, welds and composites.
- North Star Imaging (US) — industrial CT systems for 3D reconstruction of complex aerospace parts.
- Comet (CH) — X-ray sources and modules underpinning radiographic and CT inspection.
- Fujifilm (JP) — computed- and digital-radiography imaging plates and detector systems.
- Carestream NDT (US) — industrial film, digital radiography and CR scanners for weld and structure inspection.
Key evaluation criteria for Gulf procurement
- Radiation-safety licensing fit: equipment compatible with FANR (UAE) / NRRC (Saudi) facility and source-handling requirements.
- Modality: film vs CR vs DR vs full industrial CT, matched to the part — castings and AM parts increasingly need CT.
- Detector resolution & throughput: DR panel resolution and scan time against inspection volume.
- Personnel & records: RT Level 2/3 qualification and archivable digital images for audit.
