The E5000 Series is a bench-top explosive and narcotics trace detection system produced by Autoclear's Scintrex Trace division. It pairs gas chromatography (GC) with ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) in a single chassis, a combination that delivers significantly higher selectivity than IMS-only systems by separating compounds before ionisation — reducing false positives while maintaining picogram-level sensitivity for explosives and nanogram-level sensitivity for narcotics. The system is available in two configurations: the E5000 screens for nitrogen- and peroxide-based explosive compounds only, while the EN5000 adds a narcotics screening mode covering cocaine, opiates, THC, heroin, amphetamine-type stimulants, and programmable additional targets. Analysis time runs between 6 and 40 seconds depending on configuration and programme, with a cold-start warm-up under 30 minutes. The large colour touchscreen presents clear go/no-go results suited to operators with minimal laboratory background. In airport deployments the E5000 Series typically occupies checkpoint lanes for passenger hand-screening, checked-baggage reconciliation points, or dedicated ETD (explosive trace detection) stations alongside X-ray conveyor lines. Its compact footprint — 42 × 54 × 28 cm — fits standard screening console surfaces. The GC/IMS dual-technology approach is particularly relevant in GCC environments where high passenger throughput at busy hub airports demands fast, confident reads with low alarm rates. TSA, ECAC, and STAC programmes driving airport explosive trace detection expansion globally are the primary regulatory drivers for this class of equipment.
