The AV-PAPI Series 3 is Avlite's current-generation precision approach path indicator, certified by Intertek to FAA AC 150/5345-28H Style A Class I for both the L-880 four-box and L-881 two-box configurations. ICAO photometric and chromaticity third-party testing is also completed, making the same hardware compliant with both regulatory frameworks from a single purchase. The defining technical attribute is the patented LED optic, which achieves a sharper red/white angular transition than alternative LED PAPI designs. The transition line precision directly affects the angular width of the ambiguous colour band at which a pilot cannot reliably identify their glide-slope position — narrower is safer. The same optic simultaneously delivers lower power consumption than comparable units, enabling solar or DC powering at aerodromes where CCR circuit current would require additional transformer capacity. The Series 3 is available for permanent installation (standard frangible mounting) or as a portable unit with retractable legs for displaced-threshold, emergency, or rapidly redeployed configurations. Power input options cover mains AC (90–264 VAC), 24 VDC, solar, and constant current regulator (CCR) circuits. Wireless control via 900 MHz FHSS or 2.4 GHz DSSS, power-line signalling, manual, and PAL/ARCAL complete the control options. Both visible and IR optics are available within the same unit, allowing military operators to convert to NVG-only approach guidance without changing hardware. Marine-grade finishes provide corrosion resistance at coastal airfields, relevant to Gulf coastal airport environments.
