BEUMER Group's Tilt-Tray Loop Sortation System is a high-capacity baggage sortation platform built around a continuous loop of motor-driven trays. Each tray carries a single item of baggage; when the tray reaches the designated sort destination chute, it tilts laterally to discharge the bag onto the make-up slide or belt feeding that flight's outbound position. The loop format allows simultaneous sortation to many destinations, making this technology well-suited to large hub operations where dozens of active flights must receive correctly tagged bags within tight turn windows.

The distinguishing engineering feature is the drive system: BEUMER specifies a Linear Synchronous Motor (LSM) rather than conventional contact-drive technology. LSM propulsion uses electromagnetic coils in the track to drive each tray independently without mechanical contact between the tray and the drive surface. This eliminates the contact-wear mechanisms that degrade conventional belt-driven or friction-drive sorters, produces minimal noise (62 dB(A) operating level, significantly below typical baggage hall equipment), and reduces energy consumption over the system life cycle. The modular frame design accepts inclines up to 10 degrees, enabling the sorter loop to span multiple floor levels and free up space above and below the sortation loop for equipment or passenger-accessible areas.

For airports forecasting passenger growth that would traditionally justify a new terminal building, the tilt-tray loop sorter's throughput increase per square metre can defer that capital decision. The maximum item envelope of 1,000 mm × 1,000 mm and 50 kg per tray covers the full range of IATA checked-baggage dimensions, including large hard-shell cases and sporting equipment.

Best for

Use cases.

  • Hub airport baggage sortation requiring simultaneous routing to many make-up destinations
  • Terminal capacity upgrades where increasing sortation throughput is preferred to building new space
  • Multi-level baggage hall designs using inclined loop segments to utilise available vertical clearance
  • Airports replacing ageing sorters where noise level in adjacent passenger zones is a constraint
  • High-mix bag profiles where baggage dimensions and weights vary widely across the same flow
