The GENI-Belt is Fives' flagship cross-belt sorting platform, built around a continuous closed-loop train of independently driven carrier units, each equipped with its own high-friction belt conveyor. Items are loaded belt-to-belt and transported in controlled perpendicular alignment throughout the loop — through curves, inclines, and declines — without slipping or rolling. Each individual belt adjusts its speed and acceleration during the off-load event, calculating the precise trajectory based on item position, weight, and conveyor speed to place items accurately into destination chutes.

For airport baggage handling, the GENI-Belt is particularly relevant to the automated sortation segment of a BHS — the stage between check-in induction and make-up carousel or baggage claim. Its 99.99% accuracy claim and fault-tolerant parallel architecture are directly material to baggage reconciliation performance and airline SLA compliance. The system handles items from small flat documents up to 80 kg parcels 1,500 mm long, meaning a single loop can service both standard checked baggage and most oversized bags without a separate divert path.

The GENI-Belt's full redundancy design is a key differentiator in a 24/7 airport environment: every component has a standby counterpart, friction drive units are distributed around the loop and each carry dual brushless motors, and patented power-generating wheels feed energy back into the system on descent sections. When a single drive unit fails, its neighbour absorbs the load and the system continues without standstill. Procurement teams evaluating BHS automation for high-throughput GCC hubs — where operational hours, peak loads, and aircraft turnaround times are exacting — should weigh the GENI-Belt against the alternative of multiple parallel shoe sorters with their higher aggregate maintenance load.

Best for

Use cases.

  • Automated baggage sortation between check-in induction and make-up carousels
  • Postal and express parcel hub sortation requiring high accuracy and continuous uptime
  • Multi-destination baggage distribution in large terminal buildings with constrained floor layouts
  • Systems requiring future capacity expansion without replacing the core loop
  • Operations demanding redundant architecture to avoid single-point-of-failure standstill
