AB-1000 LED L-801A(L) Beacon (Voyager Series)
Voyager Series rotating LED airport beacon producing over 160,000 peak candela white and 170,000 peak candela green from a 195 W, 90 lb unit rated to ±55°C.
The AB-1000 LED is Hughey & Phillips' Voyager Series airport/airfield identification beacon, designated to FAA Type L-801A(L). A rotating beacon visible from all azimuths, it produces the alternating white-green flash sequence that identifies a civil land aerodrome, or the white-white sequence that identifies a military aerodrome or heliport, depending on optical configuration.
The unit generates over 160,000 peak candela in the white channel and over 170,000 peak candela in the green channel, with effective intensities of approximately 60,000 eff-cd white and 30,000 eff-cd green at 12 RPM rotation. These figures satisfy FAA AC 150/5345-12F requirements for high-intensity airport beacons. The 50,000-hour LED life rating — applied to both the white and green arrays — eliminates the lamp-change interval that drives most of the maintenance burden on conventional sealed-beam beacon installations, which typically require lamp replacement every 1,000–3,000 hours.
At 195 W real power draw (202 VA apparent, 0.95 power factor), the AB-1000 is substantially more efficient than the 500–1,000 W incandescent beacons it replaces, with no sacrifice in beam intensity. Physical dimensions of 39 × 24 × 12 inches and a 90 lb weight reflect a compact, aluminium-enclosure design in aviation orange finish. The brushless gearmotor eliminates brush wear as a maintenance concern. LED fault monitoring with fail-safe dry-contact closure enables integration into airfield lighting management systems or SCADA platforms.
The operating temperature rating of −55°C to +55°C (with high-voltage relays rated to +125°C) means the unit is calibrated to function through both the extreme cold of high-latitude mountain sites and the sustained ambient heat of Gulf-region aerodromes, where beacon enclosure temperatures regularly exceed 50°C in summer.

Use cases.
- ›Primary aerodrome identification beacon on civil land airports requiring FAA L-801A(L) compliance
- ›Military aerodrome and heliport identification where white-white flash sequence is required
- ›Replacement of 500–1,000 W incandescent rotating beacons to eliminate lamp-change maintenance cycles
- ›Airfields in high-temperature climates (Gulf, Middle East, tropical) where enclosure heat management is a design constraint
- ›Airfield lighting management system integration via dry-contact fault monitoring output
