L-850 / L-852 Series LED In-Pavement Lights
Style-3 LED inset taxiway centreline lights in four certified variants covering straight, curved, and sub-1200 RVR low-visibility operations.
The L-852 series comprises Style-3 inset LED taxiway centreline lights covering the four variants required by FAA AC 150/5345-46 to address the full range of pavement geometry and visibility category encountered at a certificated aerodrome. The four types — L-852A (straight, ≥1200 RVR), L-852B (curved, ≥1200 RVR), L-852C (straight, <1200 RVR), and L-852D (curved, <1200 RVR) — are the primary surface-guidance light type for taxiway operations and the low-visibility variants are specifically qualified for CAT II/III surface movement guidance systems.
Inset pavement lights bear the heaviest mechanical loads in airfield lighting — cyclic compressive stress from landing gear, repeated freeze-thaw, and chemical attack from glycol-based de-icing fluids. Hughey & Phillips address this with optically matched high-power LEDs under glass lenses sized to the Style-3 profile, field-replaceable renewal assemblies that reduce the fixture replacement to a lens-swap without disturbing the base can, and a pressure test valve that allows technicians to verify housing seal integrity in situ before returning the fixture to service. Seals are tested against Cryotech XT350, EX180, and E36 fluids — the three most common glycol formulations in current use at northern-hemisphere airports.
An optional thermostatically controlled arctic heater activates below freezing to prevent ice ingress from locking the lens assembly, extending service life at cold-climate aerodromes. LED life is rated above 50,000 hours, which at standard light step operation equates to well over a decade between lamp-assembly exchanges on a typical high-cycle runway or apron. Each variant carries its own individual Certificate of Conformance, ETL certification, and Buy American compliance.
