The L-861 and L-862 series are elevated LED airfield lighting fixtures covering the most common fixture types on a runway pavement: runway edge (L-862), runway threshold and displaced threshold (L-862E), and stop bar (L-862S). Elevated runway lights operate in a series constant-current circuit — typically 6.6 A — driven by an airfield CCR, and must present stable photometric performance across all intensity steps without introducing harmonic distortion that disrupts circuit regulation.

Hughey & Phillips specify Total Harmonic Distortion below 1.1% for the L-862 series, a figure that reflects the quality of the internal LED driver and significantly below the levels that cause CCR tripping or circuit imbalance in multi-fixture series strings. The die-cast aluminium housing and 316 stainless steel fasteners are selected for corrosion resistance — relevant both to de-icing salt spray at temperate airports and to the marine aerosol environment at coastal Gulf airports. Tempered, heat and shatter-resistant glass lenses are specified to handle the mechanical and thermal shock of aircraft jet blast and wheel spray.

The bi-directional L-862 requires a 30 or 45 W isolation transformer (65 W with arctic kit); the unidirectional L-862E and L-862S require 20 or 25 W (30 or 45 W with arctic kit), and the standard runway fixture draws less than 35 VA at the highest intensity step. Fixture MTBF exceeds 50,000 hours, consistent with the LED life figures across the H&P airfield range. The units comply with both 3-step and 5-step CCR intensity requirements and operate on any CCR type without matching restrictions. All variants meet FAA AC 150/5345-46 and Engineering Brief 67D, are ETL certified, and satisfy Buy American requirements.

Best for

Use cases.

  • Runway edge lighting on precision IFR runways (CAT I/II/III) requiring certified L-862 fixtures
  • Threshold and displaced threshold marking with L-862E on instrument runways
  • Stop bar lighting at controlled intersections using the L-862S variant
  • Corrosive-environment installations (coastal, high-humidity) benefiting from 316 SS hardware
  • Replacement of incandescent elevated runway lights on any CCR type without transformer matching
