PAPI LED (IWT.650.PP.01)
Four-box LED PAPI delivering ICAO-compliant glide path guidance at 85,000 cd white and 17,900 cd red with a rated LED life exceeding 60,000 hours.
The IWT.650.PP.01 is inewatt's LED Precision Approach Path Indicator, providing the visual glide slope signal that guides pilots through the final approach segment onto the runway threshold. A complete PAPI installation places four of these units at a regulated distance from the threshold on the non-approach side; the proportion of white versus red boxes visible to the approaching pilot encodes whether the aircraft is above, on, or below the design approach slope, enabling intuitive correction without instrument cross-check during the critical final few hundred feet of descent. The LED optical assembly produces a white beam at 85,000 cd and a red beam at 17,900 cd, meeting ICAO Annex 14 Volume I intensity requirements for visibility in all meteorological conditions down to the limiting visibility of visual approach procedures. The white-to-red angular transition is engineered to less than 3 arc-minutes of spread with an intensity ratio below 3:1 across the beam — the tight transition is the characteristic that gives PAPI its precision, and this specification matches the halogen variant exactly, making the LED model a direct photometric upgrade rather than a performance compromise. Hardened front glass protects the optic against runway FOD. At 100 VA per unit on the standard 6.6 A series circuit, four units draw 400 VA total — a modest load within any contemporary CCR's capacity. The LED source exceeds 60,000 hours of rated life, compared to roughly 3,000 hours for halogen, eliminating roughly 20 lamp change cycles and the associated runway-edge access operations over the fixture's service life. This maintenance advantage is pronounced at high-cycle runways and at GCC airports where ramp access constraints are tight. Operating temperature range of −55°C to +55°C covers the extremes of winter military deployments and peak-summer Gulf ramp temperatures.
