The Motorola MOTOTRBO product line is a professional Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) family built to the ETSI DMR standard, sitting between consumer-grade licence-free radios and the full mission-critical TETRA standard in terms of cost and capability. MOTOTRBO radios — exemplified by the current R7 portable — operate in DMR Tier II (direct and conventional) and Tier III (trunked) modes and support analogue operation on the same frequencies, enabling a managed migration away from legacy analogue radio estates without a day-one infrastructure cutover.

DMR's fundamental channel structure divides a single 12.5 kHz channel into two independent TDMA timeslots, each with 6.25 kHz equivalent efficiency. In practical airport terms, this doubles the voice capacity of an existing analogue channel licence — a meaningful saving where spectrum allocations are fixed and expensive. Motorola's MOTOTRBO Capacity Plus (single-site trunking) and Capacity Max (multi-site trunking) system modes extend this into full trunked operation across an airport campus, with dynamic channel assignment routing calls to whichever timeslot is free.

The R7 — the current flagship portable — is rated IP68 (2 m for 2 hours) and IP66, meets MIL-STD-810 for shock, vibration, and temperature, and carries an IMPRES Li-Ion battery. It is available in VHF (136–174 MHz), UHF, and 800/900 MHz variants. Advanced audio processing delivers Motorola's noise suppression capability critical for ramp environments where jet blast and GSE engine noise routinely exceed 90 dB. Documented deployments in the aviation sector include Ryanair's ground operations, where MOTOTRBO Capacity Plus improved ground team coordination speed and safety. MOTOTRBO sits at the right price-performance point for airlines, ground handlers, and airport operators that need a competent digital radio estate without the infrastructure investment a full TETRA system requires.
