The LIRA is a unidirectional 12-inch inset LED light designed for the approach lighting system (ALS) inset positions: centreline lights, crossbar lights, and side-row barrette lights in the touchdown zone of approach systems such as ALSF-2, MALSR, and ICAO CAT II/III approach configurations. Inset approach lights are used on or near the threshold when the approach is over a paved surface — common at busy international airports where the approach area is itself a displaced threshold, stopway, or blast pad rather than unpaved terrain.

Two optical variants are available: approach white (73 VA) for the primary centreline and crossbar positions that must be visible at long range in adverse weather, and approach red (61 VA) for the runway-end side-row barrettes and inner markers that indicate the transition from approach to runway surface. The power-level difference reflects the differing intensity requirements prescribed by ICAO Annex 14 and FAA AC 150/5340-30 for these roles.

At 12 inches the LIRA shares a can size with OCEM's threshold and edge inset fixtures, enabling airport operators running a standardised inset programme to use the same excavation jig and isolation transformer specification across all approach-area inset positions. The 6.35 mm protrusion minimises vibration transmission from aircraft overruns in the threshold region.

The certification envelope covers ICAO, EASA, IEC, NATO, and CAA — a broad base suited to European, GCC, and Commonwealth aerodromes executing approach light LED conversion programmes. A monitoring device provides open-circuit fault detection to support the serviceability requirements of CAT II/III approach certification.

Best for

Use cases.

  • Centreline and crossbar inset positions in ALSF-2, MALSR, and ICAO CAT II/III approach systems
  • Side-row barrette lighting on threshold and inner approach sections
  • Airports with paved approach surfaces requiring inset rather than elevated approach fixtures
  • LED conversion of existing inset halogen approach systems with shared CCR infrastructure
  • European and GCC airports requiring ICAO Annex 14 and EASA-compliant approach lighting
