VarioStore Flex
World-first robotics-based early bag store using AGV-moved mobile racks to provide flexible, direct-access storage in constrained terminal spaces.
VarioStore Flex is Vanderlande's AGV-based early baggage storage system, designed for airports where the physical envelope available for early-bag storage — ceiling height, floor area, structural load points — rules out conventional high-bay automated storage solutions. The system uses automated guided vehicles to move mobile bag-holding racks to predefined positions, creating a dense but dynamically reconfigurable storage grid rather than a fixed-racking infrastructure.
The key operational advantage over traditional early-bag stores is direct, individual bag access: because each rack is independently mobile, the system can retrieve any specific bag without needing to process or move surrounding bags first. This matters in batch-build operations where the BHS control software assembles specific flight builds from early bags, pulling bags in the precise order needed to minimise make-up operator movement.
VarioStore Flex is compatible with both ICS (Individual Carrier System / TUBTRAX) and belt-conveyor-fed BHS architectures, making it retrofittable into existing systems rather than requiring a full-platform commitment. Its AGV-based design is particularly suited to constrained installations: lower ceiling height requirements and floor-level access mean it fits in locations where ADAPTO BAGSTORE's high-bay shuttle racking cannot.
For airports in the GCC expanding terminal capacity into existing buildings with restricted ceiling-to-floor ratios — common in phased pier expansions — VarioStore Flex offers a storage solution sized to the physical reality of the space rather than the theoretical ideal.
