AirWave Modular Seating
Award-winning modular lounge seating with sinusoidal wave forms, integrated power, and infinite configuration for high-density airport terminals.
AirWave is a modular contract seating collection engineered for the demanding throughput environment of airport landside and airside lounges. Designed by Charles Godbout (Topo Design, Canada) and manufactured in Italy by Altek Italia Design, the system won the prestigious Good Design Award 2022 — the same programme founded in Chicago in 1950 by Edgar Kaufmann Jr. alongside Charles and Ray Eames. The collection builds from individual ottomans (poufs) upward through single seats, benches, and compound lounge arrangements in both linear and curved runs. Its defining visual language is the interplay of high and low backrest panels with short or long wave profiles, producing sinusoidal curves that simultaneously define personal space and maintain visual openness — critical in a gate lounge where passengers need a sense of enclosure without obstructing circulation sightlines. From a procurement standpoint, the key differentiators are configurability and technology integration. A single collection can furnish a regional gate hold-room and a large international pier: the same modules combine to create both high-density linear rows and softer island groupings for premium zones. Optional integrated power outlets, USB-A/C ports, and wireless Qi charging surfaces are factory-mounted at seat sides, eliminating third-party charging-furniture retrofits. Structure is plywood with steel back support; legs are powder-coated in black, silver (RAL 9006), white, or graphite-grey (RAL 7024). Foam is non-flammable; upholstery options include fire-resistant synthetic leather or fabric. Seat height across the range is 430 mm, suited to standard adult ergonomics. Models are suitable for airports, hotel lobbies, corporate offices, and universities — the airport operating context being the primary design brief.
