quantum FleX lightweight galley trolley
A composite-frame, full-ATLAS/KSSU-compatible galley trolley that cuts empty weight relative to aluminium alternatives without sacrificing load capacity.
The quantum FleX is Norduyn's second-generation lightweight galley trolley, introduced at the AIX Hamburg show in 2015 as a more cost-accessible derivative of the original all-composite Quantum. Where the Quantum is a fully monocoque composite chassis, the FleX pairs a composite skin and door assembly with a conventional aluminium structural frame, delivering meaningful weight reduction at a lower unit price — a pragmatic answer to airline procurement teams that saw value in the Quantum's fuel-savings story but faced capital-cost pressure. Both ATLAS and KSSU dimensional standards are supported, allowing the FleX to drop into existing galley monuments without modification. The trolley is used for meal service, bar/beverage rounds, and duty-free sales on short- to long-haul narrowbody and widebody aircraft. Its composite outer panels are RFID-transparent — a growing requirement for caterers running automated cart-tracking systems — whereas aluminium shells block scanner reads. Composite construction also reduces condensation build-up compared to metal, relevant in hot and humid operating environments such as Gulf-region ramp transfers. For a GCC-based airline or caterer evaluating galley fleet renewal, the FleX sits in a well-established product family: the original Quantum series had more than 37,000 units in service across multiple operators, giving the FleX a known supply chain and MRO ecosystem. Norduyn holds AS9100 certification and has regulatory expertise spanning FAR 25.853 FST requirements. The central trade-off versus the full Quantum is that the hybrid frame does not deliver quite the same dry-ice-retention advantage, but it brings the weight-reduction benefit within reach of higher-volume fleet orders.
