The CTX 5800 in baggage handling system application brings certified CT explosives detection to airports and cargo facilities where the full inline HBS conveyor infrastructure of a major hub is absent or economically impractical. At regional airports, secondary terminals, and standalone cargo acceptance points, the system operates either as an off-conveyor standalone unit or in a simplified short-conveyor configuration rather than a full multi-level HBS.

The 750 mm CT tunnel and 450 bags per hour throughput match the operational tempo of regional departures rather than hub peak loads, and the compact physical envelope — conveyor height of 616 mm — allows installation in existing baggage rooms without major civil modification. The single X-ray generator dual-energy design simplifies maintenance by reducing component count relative to multi-generator CT systems.

Regulatory coverage is wide for a compact system: ECAC EDS Standard 3, TSA, CAAC, and IPMO certifications allow deployment at airports where airlines or authorities from multiple regulatory jurisdictions operate. IPMO certification is particularly relevant for airports serving routes subject to Indian government security requirements.

In the Smiths Detection CT EDS range, the CTX 5800 is the entry point: it provides the same detection technology and regulatory credentials as the CTX 9800 DSi but in a package scaled for sub-hub environments. For procurement teams at GCC regional airports undergoing modernisation — including Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 airport expansion programme — it offers ECAC Standard 3 compliance without the conveyor infrastructure investment that a full inline system demands.

Use cases.

  • Certified hold baggage EDS at regional and low-volume airports
  • Off-conveyor standalone baggage screening at secondary or remote check-in
  • Cargo acceptance CT screening without full inline BHS infrastructure
  • ECAC Standard 3 compliance for airports too small for full inline HBS deployment
  • Hold baggage capacity backup or overflow screening at larger airports during works
