The iLane A20 is Smiths Detection's current-generation fully automated passenger checkpoint lane, designed to maximise throughput and security effectiveness while reducing officer workload at high-traffic airport checkpoints. The system integrates the physical checkpoint workflow — passenger divestment, tray loading, X-ray screening, automatic alarm resolution, and tray return — into a single motorised lane with intelligent tray routing.

Parallel divest stations allow multiple passengers to prepare simultaneously ahead of the X-ray belt, eliminating the serial queue bottleneck that constrains throughput on conventional lanes. An incline module in front of the X-ray unit enables direct tray re-insertion for re-screened items. Trays containing items flagged by the X-ray system are automatically diverted from the cleared lane to a secondary search area, with trays assessed as high-threat routed into a lockable containment module — keeping alarm resolution separate from the main passenger flow.

Empty tray verification confirms that trays re-entering the lane are clean before they reach passengers at the divest stations. The modular construction allows the lane to be configured to specific terminal dimensions and throughput targets. Integration with Checkpoint.Evoplus provides real-time operational data, lane health monitoring, and performance analytics.

For airports expanding checkpoint capacity or undertaking regulatory modernisation, the iLane A20 is the platform onto which CT scanners (6040 CTiX) and advanced management software are integrated as a single system — it is designed as the infrastructure of a complete checkpoint rather than a standalone tray-return add-on.
