The iLane.evo is an automated checkpoint tray return and management system designed to eliminate the labour of manual tray recovery at airport passenger screening lanes. Once passengers have collected their items from the X-ray output end, the system automatically conveys empty trays back to the divest stations at the lane entrance, maintaining a continuous supply without staff intervention. A built-in re-routing belt diverts trays requiring secondary inspection away from the cleared passenger stream, preventing the backlog that forms when a flagged tray blocks the end of a conventional static lane.

The modular design allows the system to be configured around the geometry of existing checkpoint layouts, accommodating different terminal widths and lane lengths without civil modifications. As passenger volumes increase over time, additional modules can be added to extend lane capacity.

The iLane.evo addresses a practical operational problem at medium and high-volume checkpoints: manual tray return requires officers to move trays continuously, drawing attention away from queue management and passenger interaction. Removing that task allows officers to focus on the screening function.

In the Smiths Detection checkpoint product hierarchy, the iLane.evo is the automated lane infrastructure layer that supports any of the HI-SCAN X-ray units. It integrates with Checkpoint.Evoplus for operational data collection. The successor iLane A20 adds parallel divest and the high-threat lockable module for airports requiring a full automated checkpoint rather than an automated tray-return retrofit.
