NovAtel GRIT - GNSS Resilience and Integrity Technology
OEM7 firmware suite for GNSS interference, jamming and spoofing detection with spectrum analysis and mitigation
GNSS Resilience and Integrity Technology (GRIT) is Hexagon | NovAtel's firmware suite for its OEM7 generation of GNSS receivers, developed to give operators a comprehensive understanding of their RF environment and to answer the question every airport, ANSP and timing operator now faces: is my GNSS under attack, and from what? GRIT combines two toolkits. The Interference Toolkit (ITK) continuously measures RF spectrum levels around the GNSS bands, using spectral analysis to detect in-band, near-band and strong out-of-band interference, plus a complementary statistical detector for out-of-band interference that distorts signals beyond the analog passband. When a threat is identified, software-applied signal processing and digital filters built into every OEM7 board - HDR mode, notch filters and bandpass filters - can mitigate the interference so GNSS signals keep tracking and the receiver continues to operate normally.
The Spoofing Detection Toolkit (SK) runs a selection of single-antenna detection metrics across multiple frequencies and constellations onboard the receiver; at the Norwegian JammerTest 2023, NovAtel's publicly published results show the SK unit monitoring GPS L1/L5, Galileo E1/E5a/E5b and BeiDou B1C/B2a observations at a 0.5 Hz detection rate with a spoofing decision every two seconds, detecting the event's complex jamming and spoofing scenarios. Galileo OSNMA navigation message authentication adds a cryptographic protection layer. For deeper analysis, GRIT can capture time-tagged snapshots of analog-to-digital samples to characterise jamming signals or feed user-developed interference-location algorithms.
The free GRIT Monitor application (part of NovAtel Application Suite) presents everything in a single dashboard: a Mitigation Assistant, interactive spectrum and waterfall viewers across all GNSS bands, a per-constellation Signal Matrix, and a map-based Position Overview with interference points of interest and event history. Critically for Gulf procurement, GRIT is a non-controlled, firmware-only product - no specific export licensing is required - and it runs on receivers from the compact OEM719 board to the PwrPak7 enclosure, making it straightforward to deploy detection-grade GNSS monitoring at airports, GBAS sites and timing-critical infrastructure.
